was very curious about the best bridge swims in the United States... certainly we often romanticize bridges... please answer the poll but speak to specifics... for example was the hosting organization great hosts? did the t-shirt rock? details related to the venue itself... in addition, note the hosting organization of the swim... I imagine several groups have hosted a golden gate bridge swim over the years... educate us too... are there bridge swims in the pacific northwest? what bridge would you like to swim? USA only please! Pensacola 3-Mile Bridge Swim, Pensacola, FL Golden Gate Bridge Swim, San Francisco, CA Great Chesapeake Bay 4.4-Mile Swim, Stevensville, MD Brooklyn Bridge Swim, New York City, NY Long Bridge Swim, Lake Pend Oreille, Sandpoint, ID

MIMS crosses something like 19 bridges (backstroke required!) including the bklyn bridge, manhattan bridge, williamsburg bridge, gw bridge. a couple of years ago, cibbows did a verrazano bridge swim. the golden gate was a great swim......ahhhh bridges!
  • I have only done the Chesapeake swim so I can't speak to the others. Chesapeake is a well organized, fun race between the two spans of the Lane Memorial Bridge.

Bridge To Bridge Swim in Atlantic City. Great back-bay swim in calm water with some subtle navigation challenges. Good start and finish facility with showers. The Rainbow Channel Swim near AC used to go under bridges for the Garden State Parkway and Route 9. Scary to see how in need of repair they were. Course is different now and no bridges. -LBJ

my intent is swim along or under the length of the bridge and not a pass under the bridge... all entries in the poll are along the length of the bridge. I cannot imagine the great chesapeake swim isn't the best known swim. a goal of mine is the bay bridge to golden gate bridge swim. LBJ - have you done the Sandpoint Swim?

I like Chesepeake because of the distance but I think the Save the Bay swim in Rhode Island is just as well organized, has better shirts and a much better post race party. The course parallels the Newport Bridge so it qualifies.

I've always headed out too quickly to see or enjoy post-swim activities. a few friends have found a nearby blue crab restaurant that looks unbelievable, but i've neglected that too. the chesapeake swims - 4.4 and 1 - are top-notch. my bucket list includes the rockland breakwater swim.

The Pensacola Bridge Swim is an excellent and challenging race measuring approximately 3 1/2 miles... water temperature usually at 70 F It is a one-way race from Pensacola to Gulf Breeze, FL... good food and drink at the finish often including Michelob Ultra. The 2010 incarnation, Sunday, May 23, will include a 10K... from Gulf Breeze and return... www.3milebridgeswim.org/ A bushwacker at the sandshaker lounge at pensacola beach is a must... Franco's Italian Restaurant‎ in pensacola is excellent, and a perfect pre-race dinner. i highly recommend a trip to pensacola's fish market - Joe Patti's - too I've done this swim alone, as a bachelor weekend on at least two ocassions, with the pregnant fiance, and now :bow:my bride and :bow:6-month old daughter are looking forward to the 2010 swim. :cheerleader:If you live in the southeastern united states, this is a great open water swim destination.:cheerleader:

Sandpoint, Idaho would be considered the PNW, so you've already included one. knelson - are any of the oregon or washington swims along a bridge? how many open water swims does the seattle - tacoma area have? fat salmon and emerald city? I had a great long weekend several years ago which included the long bridge swim and a cascade lakes swim - portland - sandpoint - bend - portland. needless to say I drove much of the time I wasn't in the water.
