I do most of my swimming in a pool, but train OW in a full when the water is uncomfortably cold. I also do a tri relay in my full figuring it is faster than a brief. I belieive it is.
Are long johns better for pool swimmers? I would describe my recovery as high elbow zipper style front quadrant etc etc. I never really get comfortable in my suit. Should I be experimenting with a long john? Are long johns better for some swimmers, or are full's always better?

There is no one answer. I have a high end swimming wetsuit that is so flexible I do not feel it even at the start. Rule is that a full suit is faster than a john so long as it does not restrict your stroke. Fit of the suit and upper body flexibility are absolutely critical. If it is a less expensive suit you might prefer a john. I own a john for wetsuit legal warmer water triathlons were a full suit is just too warm for me but I still want the buoyancy advantage of a wetsuit.
