I received the World Water Swim e-newsletter and took an interest in an item - an upcoming golden gate swim has been cancelled due.
a note states 'All swimmers who registered for this 4/1 Thursday 's Golden Gate Bridge to Aquatic Park swim will receive a full refund of fees paid to WWS or credit for next month's swim due to the emptying of the Bay for repairs and sismic upgrading to the GGBridge. Starting today giant barge pumps will pump the water out to the ocean until next Saturday. A new tube for Bart extension will be installed at the same time. Water will be pumped back on Saturday April 3rd.'
the 'emptying' of the bay?' I cannot imagine this... what does this look like? can any san francisco swimmers enlighten us? ...seems a fantastic event - the emptying of the bay I mean... any bay swim is exceptional too!

and if this is an april fool's... it isn't my april fool's
this must be a joke... I am aware that San Francisco did intend on filling the bay some 100 years ago.
too much a stretch
ugh... pedro got me! if only he added Willie Mays and Barry Bonds would supervise the work from the giants ballpark...
April Fools joke of course.
If you've seen the Bay you'd know. Even the tides haven't ever been able to empty it.
On top of that their Golden Gate swim in mid-October if I recall correctly

bob - I have seen and swam it - about a half-dozen alcatraz swims... feeling mostly amused anyway.
I didn't imagine it would be emptied but am clueless as to what the bay looks like on its largest ebb tides.
I'll be in san francisco in june to swim pedro's round the rock on the saturday and the alcatraz sharkfest on the sunday. I hope I don't have to walk the course... I hate running...
hopefully they'll have the bridge rebuilt and the tube to oakland redone - might have to head to mcafee for an A's game.

LOL
While you're there don't forget to look under the wharfs for spare change.
Swim around the Rock is on my list. Last year I did swim with the centurions in the end of august. As I was standing on the beach after the swim I look out to Alcatraz and had this almost uncontrollable urge to swim out and come back. They had Alcatraz Touch & Go a month later so I went back for it. Loved the swim.
On note of advice. As you head out toward the opening out of aquatic park it is easy to sight on the small white buoy marking the entrance. As you get closer you don't even need it to sight on. Just sight on the breakwater to your left and right as you breathe. It comes together in a semi-circle so if you sight to the sides you will end up dead center in the opening out into the Bay. That's what I did and I ended up smack in the middle as I accelerated out into open water. Only problem is that I forgot about the buoy and swam deadon into it. I didn't realize it but I opened a gash in my forehead and was chumming for sharks the entire swim. I knew something was wrong when I saw the people at the finish staring at the blood coming down my face.
