Mallory and Hoosier, this looks like a generous slate of swims at a beautiful venue. I read through the event packet - thanks for all the detail! - and have a few additional questions.
- 10K escorts: mandatory, optional, or prohibited?
- 10K feeding station: is there one?
- The section on Safety Procedures reads as follows:Swimmers are required to wear the cap provided at any time during the warm-up, competition, or warm-down will be removed from the water and scratched from competition.
I think a couple words may be missing in that sentence, but does this mean if, say, my cap inadvertently falls off in the middle of a race (some folks wear goggles under cap), I get DQ'd?
- In re: the section on Athlete Attitude, will race officials be empowered to issue "yellow cards" & "red cards"? I have seen this in national and international-level competition, but not in Masters. I'm almost a little intrigued by the idea of getting a yellow card. So edgy!
- Finally... "Swim for Kid's Sake" or "Swim for Kids' Sake" ? Just in case you haven't printed the t-shirts yet...
Hmmmmm, you read every word, didn't you?
Thats it, you've got the job. Welcome to the Swim For KIDS' Sake race administration team! Where were you 3 months ago?
Escorts-We will be providing all of the escorts needed. There will be a few powered boats and a lot of kayaks in the water.
Feeding Station-There will be a feeding area on the 2.5km course (for use in the 5k and the 10k) so you will have 1 chance to feed in the 5k and 3 chances during the 10K.
Athlete conduct: The verbage was left over from the original race packet that was written for dual sanctioning, but the idea will remain the same.
Cap removal: Athletes should be reasonable, and so will we.
mallory - you should do what you can to enlist the support and assistance of the multitude of swim programs proximate to Lake Maxinkuckee.
Culver Academies and Culver High School... New Plymouth... Notre Dame and wide range of others...
I am clueless as to the location of the public beach - 'it can't be googled' - but I have spent more than my fair share of time at Lake Maxinkuckee.
I'll likely move heaven and earth to make the swim... good luck
The public beach is "downtown" Culver. It is not hard to find, but yours is a good question and we will need to post driving instructions to the beach in the near future. The course does not start or end at the Academy but basically goes from the beach to the Academy and back.....kinda. The Academy has been great to us! Granting the use of their button timing system, and the use of their bouys for course marking. The Culver park department has granted us the use of the Beach House for race activities, at no charge. And as this is for a charity, when you can save any money it is a big plus. You are also right, this is a beautiful venue, which is exactly why we choose it. By being at the public beach area, there are picnic tables both covered and uncovered, swings, play areas and easy access to restaurants, (dont miss the Root Beer stand) gas stations, bathrooms and of course a beach. So bring your family and spend the day, they wont be bored... Hope to see you there, please say hello when checking in.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the cubbies have a homestand that weekend too... wrigley, murphy's and maxinkuckee
a perfect open water swim weekend
good luck

OK - but only if I get to give yellow cards to people swimming next to me.
Cap removal: Athletes should be reasonable, and so will we.Glad to hear it! It's actually not just a hypothetical. My cap fell off about 3K into Big Shoulders last year. :frustrated:
