Looking for a Long Distance OW Coach

I am planning and preparing for a 10 mile swim in Utah in August 2010 and the possibility of a Catalina/English channel swim in 2011 or 2012. I am looking for a coach that could help me in my training as well as coaching me during a channel swim if I feel I can go forward with one. I workout in Lake Oswego, Oregon. I am OK with online coaching for training purposes with some one on one time for stroke assistance. If I am successful with preparation for a channel swim it would include an all paid trip to the swim location. I need someone with experience coaching long distance swimmers.

for the EC in 2011, you should start trying to book a pilot right now! i would also recommend spending some time in dover. many swimmers show up on weekends to swim and train under the supervision of freda streeter and company. also, if you have the chance to crew for a swim, you can witness first hand the pilot and observers during a crossing.... very useful and impressive. i am going to be in dover this summer for three weeks. PM me if you would like to join. my catalina date is july 20.... i don't know if i will have much time to train in california pre-swim.
  • Great advice. I found it at Amazon but I think a local bookstore has it and was going to pick up a copy today. I hadn't thought to contact the author. I'll read the book over the next couple of days. I could't imagine speaking to her before I read her book twice. :-) Besides having an awesome record in OW swimming, Marcia has great knowledge of channel swimming and the channel swimming community. The other thought that occurred to me is that Steven Munatones is another person who could possibly be very helpful. There is also a Facebook group that Steve has set up www.facebook.com/home.php You might find other members in your area to work with. Good luck (you crazy people!):)

Let's stay in touch for support and motivation. you can never have too much. You bet. I'm concentrating on Masters Nationals right now since its here in my hometown this Spring. Once that is over I'll probably concentrate more on OW swimming. I had wanted to have a goal of doing a EC attempt in summer 11' (just after I turn 40) but logistically and training wise I'd like one more year. I know I need some cold water training as I've never been in water below 75 probably! Physically, I think I could easily be ready, but its just that acclimation to cold I need, and that take time from everything I've read. I hope to do the Key West Swim in June. If that doesn't workout logistically I have alot of local swims planned. Last summer I did some 5K's (and one 4.5 miler) so I'm looking to do 10K's this summer and keep building the distance from there.

I might add 1 or 2 cold water races in the SF Bay. I also train and race triathlons. I raced 6 last year in addition to 4 OW races. I started 2 years ago and it was how I found my way back into OW racing.
  • You should get in touch with Marcia Cleveland and read her book http://www.doversolo.com/

I have lots of old swimmer friends that switched over to Tri's after college and do very well.

Tri's is where I STOP! I can't run too much due to my back so I have to stick to the water. I have lots of old swimmer friends that switched over to Tri's after college and do very well. Funny, I started into tris a couple of years ago because I had a chronic shoulder problem but it was good enough to do very well in the swim leg. Since then my shoulder has got a lot better. Training for tris allowed me to develop a very high level of fitness without over stressing my shoulder. It has gotten stronger every year. As for the other disciplines, I can ride well, but not particularly fast. I can run but due to multiple left knee surgeries I train in the mud or wood chipped trails. I can't train very hard for the run but in a race I do fine. I have only done Sprints and Olympic distances. Because of my age (57), there aren't as many competitors so I routinely end up on the podium. It helps that I have learned how to change clothes quickly (the 4th discipline).

I train in Salem, but you have 2 EC swimmers in the beaverton area. Also another that did Catalina last Sept. I have a relay doing EC on the first tide in July this year & have a slot for a solo in 2011. If you haven''t done much ocean/cold swimming, you may want to think 2012. The slots for 2011 are filling. Mine has been scheduled for quite awhile. We do train together occasionally. Last year we started in Hagg Lake in April. Short swims at first due to the cold water, but in May when the water temps got closer to 60, the swims got longer. Also Nehalem Bay is a good place for training in the summer. I did/ do get workouts from Coach Nate that posted as an online coach for 2009 (Long distance with the least resistence).
