During the winter Olympics they did a story about a Dutch speed-skating race, held on frozen canals, called the Elfstedentocht (Eleven-City Tour). It's about 200k, and is a huge big deal in Holland. I have no idea if these canals are swimmable during the summer, but if they are, I imagine this would make for a scenic stage swimming race.
