Underwater alarm?

Does anyone have suggestions for an underwater device to signal swimmers? We'd be using it from a kayak, so something along the lines of a "clicker" might work the best. Any ideas? Thanks. JB

Are you referring to getting the attention of swimmers in the open water? Standard whistles are effectively used at professional marathon swims, solo swims (including those done by blind swimmers) and at international FINA competitions to catch the attention of swimmers from nearby escort boats or referee's boats. In addition to the audio warning, visual warnings are also given through hand signals or yellow/red/neon-colored flags or boards. In the open water, sticking a pipe in the water and striking it with a hammer or wrench would also catch my attention, depending on how far away I was from the kayaker.
