On Saturday the 10k route went outside the harbor for a short stretch (we did this three times on the 2-mile looped course). It was very tough going into the waves during these stretches and it felt as if I really had to work to make forward progress. I didn't envy the volunteers sitting out at the far buoys rocking in the waves the entire race (a big thank you to them). I'd say the water was a little colder than 67F, but I found it manageable without a wetsuit. My "feeder" said that a couple of people came into the feeding zone saying they couldn't feel their arms due to the cold and chose not to continue. I find it interesting that the DNFs were all men - no women DNFs. I didn't swim on Sunday, but I understand the 3-mile was changed to a 2-mile in order to keep the route within the harbor because of the rough water outside the harbor. It was blowing pretty hard on Sunday, so I think this was a prudent decision.
