One I would avoid is the Red Roof Inn downtown. Its convenient to Ohio Street beach and less expensive than others but I stayed there last year and had a terrible experience. After switching rooms three times, I gave up trying to get a room where the HVAC worked (the windows do not open either). The halls were dark, dirty and smelled. The rooms were not much better. Definitely a 0 star rating from me.
I have stayed at a number of hotels in downtown Chicago that are within a short walk to Ohio St. beach. The RRI was the only one I would not recommend. A lot depends on how much you would like to spend. When viewing websites, I would check the 'map it' to see where the hotel is in relation to the Ohio St Beach (or Navy Pier).
