Patrick -
Pretty early on in my triathlon racing days, I dated a beach life-guard captain. This guy really knew the ocean and did a lot of open water training and racing as well.
The 1st race we did together, he told me he would pick me up at 3:00am!!
"WHAT???"
Well, we had to go to the pool at his club to warmup for the triathlon which started at 7:00am...
I thought he was pretty much nuts and way to obsessive - but I decided to go with it. We swam about 1500 yards of warmup. Took a hot shower - and I had the best open water race of my life!
I also took to running easy before my Ironman races to get my heart rate up.
Other athletes always look at me like I'm crazy... but I know these things work.
Very happy to see that Gerry and Steve have put it down simply for everyone to read.
1st open water race here in Southern California is The Huntington Beach Pier Swim. Saturday June 13th
