I'm a 61 y.o. still-practicing physician. I've done a 1.5 mile lake swim in Maine for the last 3 years. I was able to reduce my time to 48 minutes this past summer from 49 the two previous summers. I've increased my workouts to include three days in the pool and two in the gym with a slave-driving trainer. I swim around 2500-3000 yards in the pool. I'm seriously considering the FKCC Around Key West Swim this June. It is 12.5 miles, though some of that is with the tidal current. Suggestions for training other than seek psychiatric help?

I swam around Key West in 2009 solo and intend to do it again in 2010. The water will be warm, 88 degrees, and the shallow parts are very shallow, I scraped my chest on a coral branch! Zink oxide should be made without fish oil, an most places make it with fish oil. If you look for a pharmacy that hand blends prescriptions, they can make zink oxide for you in almost any quantity. I used Head Hunter sunscreen at: www.headhuntersurf.com/indexF.php, used by lots of open water leaders. Getting a kayak through the meet director is your best bet, it is the way I got mine for the race. The kayak club is great.
