Around Key West

I'm a 61 y.o. still-practicing physician. I've done a 1.5 mile lake swim in Maine for the last 3 years. I was able to reduce my time to 48 minutes this past summer from 49 the two previous summers. I've increased my workouts to include three days in the pool and two in the gym with a slave-driving trainer. I swim around 2500-3000 yards in the pool. I'm seriously considering the FKCC Around Key West Swim this June. It is 12.5 miles, though some of that is with the tidal current. Suggestions for training other than seek psychiatric help?

I am planning on doing it too. Does anyone know where I can get mass quantities of Zinc Oxide? I am Irish, we burn easily! My wife might be the kayak assist, she will need to practice too. Is it easy to rent a kayak? Last question, are there sharks there? Not that I am scared, I was taught by Nuns! If you read the site for the event there are lots of great tips in there and links for lodging, kayaks, etc. That being said I read that you can order cans of zinc oxide from your pharmasist and kayaks are pretty cheap, $30 or so. Any sharks are likely to be Nurse sharks that are more bottom dwellers and very docile.
