Anyone else not going to St. Croix?

As I sit here trying to salvage our weekend, I am feeling sad about Hurricane Omar and having to cancel our trip to St. Croix. This was supposed to be my fifth year so I'm feeling sorry for myself. (Of course, thinking about the people down there first and foremost.) With a seven-year-old, just didn't seem smart to leave at 6:30 this morning, headed to an airport that might not have been open. Anyone else make this call?
  • This was a swimming/diving trip, I take it? You made absolutely the right call. I was in St. Croix in, hmm, 1982, and remember it as beautiful. My trip to New Hampshire this weekend may also bite the dust! This is likely the last wkend without winter snow (or jury duty call). Saturday and Sunday are supposed to be terrific days in the mountains. Hope you are able to find some consolation in local places of beauty! Regards, VB

I was going to do either St. Croix or Bonaire as my first OW swim. I am now really glad I chose Bonaire... Here is an awesome site for tracking hurricanes: http://www.stormpulse.com/

Sorry you missed the St. Croix swim. Now that the weather has turned in New England, I'm already getting itchy to swim outside again. If you're looking for another warm water adventure, I keep one of the few Caribbean open water swimming calenders on the internet here: www.swimvacation.com/11.html If anyone has any new Caribbean events to add for 09', please let me know.
  • We are actually looking for another little vacation. This was supposed to be my 5th year doing the St. Croix swim. As it turns out, it looks like it went well, but with a 7-year-old, and scheduled to fly out just 4 hours after the hurricane was going to hit, we did what we had to do. A weekend at the beaches of Maine instead... We are thinking about a trip to Andros in the Bahamas. Anyone ever been? It has a huge barrier reef, and we all love snorkeling so it could be a great family trip to escape the winter doldrums. At this point, we're just investigating so any tips are welcome! Anyone been to Eleuthera?

St Croix was my first ever open water swim and i LOVED it (despite the rough seas and puking). The Buccanneer is fabulous. Am dying to go there again..pity it's the same weekend as the Bermuda Round the Sound!!
