Big Shoulders Question

I plan on doing the Big Shoulders Swim in Chicago next month for the first time. Will drive up from Cincinnati on the day before. If I go to the Ohio St. Beach the afternoon/evening before, is it likely that I will get in a warm-up swim? If not, is there another place on the lake that would be good to get used to the lake? I have a reciprocating Y membership that will get me into the Lakewood Y, but I'd rather swim in the lake instead of a 20y pool. Thanks for the help, and to all of you who have said that this OWS is addictive, you can say that again.
  • I noticed Mike Alexandrov is entered. He is -- ? Other well-known figures are registered to swim. Some are not.
  • He is -- ? American record holder in the 100 yard *** and semi-finalist in Beijing in the 100 meter ***. Maybe he'll swim the entire 5K breaststroke!

VB, Where along the lakefront were you swimming? Also I've noticed with that particular web site the temperatures indicate much colder when cloudy conditions are indicated (heavy back shading) and then rebound when the clouds clear. Not sure how the sensors actually work but they are good for plotting trends. Saturday could be an adventure, but that's why we swim open water!
  • I noticed the remnants of Hurricane Gustav are heading for the Chicago area and heavy rain is expected. Things should be back to normal by Saturday morning, so hopefully it won't adversely affect the race.
  • Question about parking validation: how does it work? Navy Pier has gone with electronic payment stations, and give you the Evil Eye for going to the guard booth. (Does that mean the guards are going to be cussing at a few hundred swimmers?)

(Does that mean the guards are going to be cussing at a few hundred swimmers?) I don't know that answer, as I rarely drive in Chgo. Maybe contact Chris Sheean, at www.bigshoulders.org ? • www.crh.noaa.gov/.../ 61 degrees ? Said 67 at 5:45 p.m. Guess I'll have to jump in on way to grocery, report back. Contiguous-shore temps are often warmer than where the sensing buoys are. Just saying. BTW, we have had 2 days of rain and coolish air temps. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny with patches of clouds. :badday: New thingy! :eeew: Another! :applaud:

Question about parking validation: how does it work? Navy Pier has gone with electronic payment stations, and give you the Evil Eye for going to the guard booth. (Does that mean the guards are going to be cussing at a few hundred swimmers?) For parking validation, get it stamped at the announcer's booth and then when coming out of Navy Pier, drive through the manual lane (don't use the machines to pay before you go to your car) and pay there. There may be a bit of a back-up but the booth people are fine with it and certainly are aware of what's going on at Ohio Street (or at least they will be when hundreds of people come to them with stamped tickets). No worries, it will be fine. Here's for calm water!
  • Hi Ellen! Did you go in the lake today? Trip report: Lake seemed definitely warmer than 67. Water is calming down. Ppl were floating like seals. Dark layer of clouds lifted and little pink puffy ones replaced them, against a blue sky. Vermeer colors. Then I hopped on a train and went to Ohio Street Beach. The sand has been nicely groomed. Water is not smooth as glass, but looked quite fine for swimming, not too much challenge. Famous last words! We'll see what tomorrow brings. :bliss: :bed::bed:
