Big Shoulders Question

I plan on doing the Big Shoulders Swim in Chicago next month for the first time. Will drive up from Cincinnati on the day before. If I go to the Ohio St. Beach the afternoon/evening before, is it likely that I will get in a warm-up swim? If not, is there another place on the lake that would be good to get used to the lake? I have a reciprocating Y membership that will get me into the Lakewood Y, but I'd rather swim in the lake instead of a 20y pool. Thanks for the help, and to all of you who have said that this OWS is addictive, you can say that again.

Question about parking validation: how does it work? Navy Pier has gone with electronic payment stations, and give you the Evil Eye for going to the guard booth. (Does that mean the guards are going to be cussing at a few hundred swimmers?) For parking validation, get it stamped at the announcer's booth and then when coming out of Navy Pier, drive through the manual lane (don't use the machines to pay before you go to your car) and pay there. There may be a bit of a back-up but the booth people are fine with it and certainly are aware of what's going on at Ohio Street (or at least they will be when hundreds of people come to them with stamped tickets). No worries, it will be fine. Here's for calm water!
