Best Suit for Long Distance Swimming

I am doing the 25 km swim July 19, and have trouble staying warm while swimming long distances. A friend suggested a full skin suit or a knee suit would keep me warmer. She also mentioned that some of these suits have repuations for retaining water and becoming heavy after a couple of hours. Does anyone have any advice? Anything to avoid?

At the FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix events (over 15K) and at the FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships (in the 25K), a very large majority of the swimmers swim in the new high-tech suits that aid in buoyancy, water acclimization and muscular compression. Although these swimmers generally finish the 25K races between 5-6 hours, there is no report that these suits "take on" water. The advantages seem to far outweigh the disadvantages as all of the world's top open water swimmers clamor for these suits.
