Why we do it

A small group of open water swimmers meets every Thursday night at 6:45 at Sewall Pond in Arrowsic, Maine. Tonight we did 2 miles. Soon after we jumped in, the wind died out completely. The 1/2 mile long pond turned to glass, and the surrounding forest was mirrored onto the water. The air and water temp were an equal 70 degrees, the water was clear, and there was no sound but the bubbly swoosh of my stroke. I quickened my pace but lengthened my stroke, breathing cool air as a heron flew overhead. I burned the moment into my mind for use next February, when I'm back staring at the miserable black line at the bottom of the pool. Hopper www.swimvacation.com
