I have just sent in my entry for the Raging Isle Sprint (1 mile) on June 28, from Sunset Beach to the Pipeline. Has any forumite ever been in this race? Any tips? I have swum ocean open water before (2 miles the longest), but never on the North Shore. Will be joining my Oahu resident sister and brother-in-law. Can't wait!
It's a fun race, you will enjoy it. I've done it for many years. It's a short race and you're with the current. One year though, it was rough to where they had to change the course, but I found it to be fun because it was different and there was so much surf closeby that the water was splashing your face while swimming.
The scenary is nice. When finishing, the waves can get kind of rough and you have to go up a hill a smidge to the top to complete the race. I will most likely be doing it this year. You are picking a great place to visit. :)

I do the whole series every summer. This is the shortest one. If you are not accustomed to swimming through surf, I HIGHLY recommend you stay WAY outside. The famous big surf on the North Shore will be gone by June, but there is still a break about 500 meters into this race. Waves come in sets throughout the summer that are often 5-8 feet high. The spot is called Rocky Point. It is only 100 meters wide at most, so only 1-2 surfers show there to surf. Just be careful. Getting pounded by these waves is no fun.

Thanks! I've done a bit of surf swimming, but not much in 8 ft swells. I know how to swim under a wave, so we'll see. I plan to follow the crowd and see how it works out. I should be somewhere in the middle of the pack. Don't plan on setting any records, just enjoy the day and finish reasonably well.
Yay, we met today! Great job. It was a fun race. Best current and conditions ever. Great scenary as usual. Saw 2 sea turtles while warming up. Fun stuff.
