On Sunday June 8th at 8:30 am I will be entering the water for my biggest race in my career (ok I have only done 4 open waters but this is still my biggest challenge yet). I will be swimming in a local lake (2nd largest naturally occuring lake in Indiana) from the south end to the public beach area, a distance of 2.5 miles. My one and only opponent, my daughter, will be entering the water at the public beach, swimming to my southern point and back, at the same time, a total distance of 5 miles for her (I know...duh!)
While this might not seem fair, you must realize that despite my 48 years I am only in my 2nd year of swimming. My daughter, age 21. Is just graduating college, and using this swim, along with others, to tune up for her July 2008 attempt at the English Channel. A cookout/reception will be held following the swim to A) celebrate my victory B) Congratulate her on her College Degree C) send her off to England on a good note. Hope her loss in this race will not affect her psyche for the Channel. (Swam the 2.5 miles last year, in my first attempt in 1hr 44 minutes.) Please wish me luck.
