Hi Everyone--
I live a few minutes from the beach in Santa Monica. Unfortunately my pool is down and the chlorine in the other local pools has been hard on my skin. Are there any open water clubs in the LA area (like La Jolla)? I searched the internet and could not find anything. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
My friend and I were just thinking of starting a regular open water swim. Neither of us is any kind of "expert", but we've been reading up. Did you find anything?

Check out the "Morton Salt Report" at mortonsaltreport.homestead.com/
Look at the 2008 schedule. That's a great way to find events to connect with swimmers. I know there is a regular and informal weekend pier to pier group that goes between Manhattan and Hermosa as well. Can't recall right now if its Sat or Sun mornings.

There are usually groups of swimmers who gather at several beaches throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties for open water swims, especially as the water warms up. Detailed information on what lifeguard station, day and time to go can usually be found at www.swim.net, but it is usually word-of-mouth among masters swim teams near the beach areas.

Just make sure to buy a wetsuit!
Also, there are a couple of salt water pools. The Laguna Beach High School has a salt water pool. Very, very good facility.

Zebby, other than the info on this thread I haven't found anything. Water temp today was 52. Brrrr. Hopefully it will start warming up--either that or I need to get a wetsuit. Let me know if you start doing any swims.

The LA Triathlon Club has Sunday morning swims at 8am in Manhattan Beach. They will also be offering beginner swims in Redondo at 11am on Sundays. Go to www.latriclub.com and click on Calendar to see the workouts listed. They also have a Friday evening swim in Long Beach.
I know there is another group that swims T/Th early morning in the summer, but I haven't been able to find out what group that is.
I live in Hermosa, and am training for the Pier to Pier and the September Alcatraz swim. If anyone would like to start an informal group the beginning of June, please let me know! :agree:
SCAQ seems to have attracted a lot of people who, when they aren't swimming in SCAQ pool workouts, swim in the ocean. One of the SCAQ pools is the Culver Plunge, a long-course pool with saltwater, which might help resolve your chlorine problem. Frankly, I wouldn't recommend swimming with the fish, but people do it, and here's one such event (http://www.swim.net/scaq.cfm):
SANTA MONICA PIER OCEAN FESTIVAL - June 9, 2012 The world famous Santa Monica Pier and the Honolua Surf Co. kick off the summer of 2012 with the Santa Monica Pier Paddleboard Race & Ocean Festival, featuring the new 1-mile ocean swim. The 1-mile ocean swim is a looped course, just south of the pier – the swim starts at 9:15am - arrive early to park/register/warm up! Wetsuits are allowed! The event benefits Heal the Bay and its public marine education facility, the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium. Heal the Bay will receive a portion of net proceeds from the event. You can register on line at http://pierpaddle.com/

Check out Gerry Rodriques at tower26.com for coached open water swimming.
Looks like they're in your neighborhood.

I know this is a very old thread that was revived, but they've changed the Tower 26 workout to a paid workout. Something like $75 a year. Not sure what you get for that. Used to be free, changed this season
