Hi! I'm new to the USMS forums and I have a couple of questions about open water 10K swimming. How much weekly yardage is typically needed in order to survive the swim? Also, how fast would I need to go to not be pulled off the course? I'm not particularly fast, but I do have some endurance and have completed several 5K swims (generally in the 1:20-something range). Also, I'm interested in entering the USMS 10K Championships at Clemson, and I'm concerned that I might be the slowest one there (42 year old female). What is the typical range of finish times? And one more -- what does one typically do for nutrition/hydration? I haven't needed anything for the 5Ks, but it seems that the 10K is a different animal. Thanks!

If you go to the main page of usms.org and click on competition, then open water long distance, then championships, you can find the 10K results for recent USMS championships. Last year in Huntington, NY three swimmers competed in your age group whose times ranged from 3:33 to 4:07; I'm told they had adverse conditions. The 10K was last held in Clemson in 2002.
I've done a number of 5Ks myself but never had the opportunity to try 10K. I hope you give it a try - good luck!
