Im organizing a relay to swim from union pier Michigan to Chicago Wisconsin. its a 45 mile stretch going their id swim first then have my friend take the remaining 22.5 miles. wed lodge their overnight then return where id traverse the whole 45 if i felt up to it, if not wed do it again. Ive only found 1 other swimmer whose done this if you can find others please tell me. wed be doing it as a fund raiser for st.judes research hospital. We are currently enlisting sponsors, and searching for volunteers. if ou have any tips for this please comment. I can do 2.5 miles (lake water) in about 55 minutes, my friend is a newbie to open water but we have till the end of may and up until then well ramp up and do a long swim every other weekend, 5 the first, then 10 the second,ect.ect. mid march we would try 30 miles in myrtle beach while were down their. I have 10k and 15 k experience as well.. please give tips and advice and see if you can find other attempts, successes or similar feats. also would we need special permission to cross state lines this way?
Wind Waves and Sunburn by Conrad Wennerberg recounts some stories of others who have swum across Lake Michigan. This would be a good start to find out about others who have done this swim. Also Penny Deans Open Water Swimming is a good reference.
Since you’ve done 15K swims before you should be comfortable with feedings so make sure your partner gets comfortable as well. In a 45 mile someone is going to be doing some night time swimming. This freaks out some swimmers, so make sure you get in a few 2 to 4 hour night swims in your training.
Will this be with or without wetsuits?
For your newbie friend, work on open water navigation. While less important in escorted swims, learning to work with an escort craft does take a bit of practice.
There are lots of other threads on this forum that talk about this very subject, so check these out. Also, the Masters Long Distance Committee Chair (Marcia Cleveland) lives in the Chicago area, she is a great resource for open water and Marathon swimming.
