I plan on swimming the Low Country Splash on May 26th in Charleston, SC. It is an Ironman Distance Swim--2.4 miles. The race starts in the Wando River, goes under the Cooper River Bridge and finishes in the Charleston Harbor Marina.
I looked at the 2006 results and the winner's time was 37:40!!! The "worst" time out of 220 male/female competitors was 1:10:35.
Either super world class swimmers show up for this event or the river current is huge and favorable. I suspect the latter. Anyone familiar with this race?

Don't get too caught up in comparing times for different open water swims--conditions, currents and distances vary tremendously. One summer I did two different swims run by the same group---one was a one mile swim and one was a two mile swim. My time for both swims was about 30 minutes. That's part of the beauty of open water swimming--the clock does lie, unlike the cruel clock in the pool that tells you exactly how not-fast you are swimming.
