i am looking for a lake or ocean swim at the end of june or early july 2007 in the new england area (i will be staying nr. portsmouth). i do not want to do a triathalon. any swims you know of, pl let me know. thanks!:thhbbb:
There are swims in that area, including New York, which is fairly accessible from Boston. Those include the Manhattan Island Swims, http://www.nycswim.org/, which have swims on June 10 and 29, and July 15.
There is also a cable swim in Lake Placid(about a 3 to 4 hour drive from Boston) on July 21, and a Long Island 10k swim,(5 or 6 hour drive from Boston) on July 14.
On June 23, there is a lake swim in Hopkington(boston suburb), which is a fund raiser for the fight against *** Cancer. There is a companion event on Cape Cod on August 18. http://mbcc.org/swim/.
There is a Swim Across America event in Boston Harbor on July 13, check out www.active.com/event_detail.cfm, and another one in Massachusets on July 14. You can also find that one at Active.com or at the Swim Across American website. www.swimacrossamerica.org/

Good luck. There are also folks who head out to Walden Pond for regular swims and workouts.
Just a side note,...2 years ago in late October, while visiting Baxter State Park in Maine, I took a dip in Daicy Pond late in the afternoon. IT WAS COLD!!!
There was a one miler in Narrow River in Narragansett, RI around that timeframe last year. It will happen again on June 23.
