Hi all!!! I'm new to this site...so I really don't know my way around it or anything...but anyhow...I was curious if anyone knows anything about open water in New England. I pretty much know nothing...so any information would help. I live in New Hampshire. I've been swimming competitively in pools for 8 years, but I'm ready for something new, so I was curious if there are open water teams, or if there is some way to train, or if there are any competitions...what sort of equipment would I need? Is there an age grouping? Please, any help would greatly be appreciated. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!! =)

  • swimnem.org has listings for open water competition. Many of them are in ponds in Massachusetts.. I saw on a discussion group there are regulars at Walden Pond. In Rhode Island, there are regular ocean swims (organized) for training. Ocean swims in RI are much warmer than Massachusetts. The Fred Bartlett swims are in Narragansett, either at the Town beach (Sunday at 430PM, and Monday at 6PM.) Wednesdays there is either Barber's pond or Sand Hill Cove. I organize Tuesday and Thursday swims at 2nd beach in Middletown at 420 PM. We also do a couple of longer swims on a weekend (1.9 miles). Competitions in RI are save the bay (1.7 miles), in late July/Early August ($200 entry), Misquamicut in Mid-August (1-mile), and The Narrow River Turnaround swim (1 mile in brackish water.) You can also do the swim leg of any triathlon, as part of a relay. There are numerous tris. Most people use a swimmers wetsuit, bright cap, and goggles. Technique wise the key is navigation, so you have to learn to sight every 5 strokes or so. Join up with a group to learn the ways. Fred Bartlett has an ocean swim hotline for his regular open water workouts (401) 782-6911 (starting in early June) Good luck.
