Winter has arrived in force here in New England and we're planning our April vacation trip to distract us from the cold outside. We're avid body surfers and wondered if Boomer Beach in late April will be built up enough for body surfing. What can we expect in terms of water temps at that time of year? We're obviously used to swimming in pretty cold water up here but we spend most of summers body surfing on eastern Long Island where the waters are bit warmer so anything close to 70 degrees is warm for us.

By built up do you mean enough surf? The winter swells hit unpredictably to create huge surf. April could be calm or large surf, there's a good variety of beaches around so you should be able to find something good most of the time. Water temps, last year late April temps were low to mid 60's. I swam around from windan sea to the cove tha tmonth on a 63 degree day and skippe don another day with huge surf. So you could get lucky.

Some beaches lose much of their sand during the winter months andit takes much of the Spring for the "beach" to return. Besides the issue of water temp, there are certain beaches on eastern Long Island where you couldn't body surrf until early Summer. I wondered if locals body surf on that beach in late April.

this break is just N. of boomers and no sand isn't the issue. If there's surf and you are a storng swimmer and a good body surfer, the time of year won't matter.
I used to body surf in New England and I swam up in Maine for a week last summer. Let me know when you're out, maybe I can show you around.

Thanks for the tip. What is the water temp in late April? We'll be out there April 14 through April 20th. We are strong swimmers and very familar with the ocean--but know enough to seek out local knowledge.
Those pictures are pretty awesome-reminds me of eastern Long Island (NY) during hurricane season. That's where I learned how to body surf as a kid.

I've heard that the surf is booming pretty strong these past few days in San Diego. How is the swimming, SDSwimmer??

I went skiing for the holiday so I haven't seen it since I swam on the 23rd (small surf at the shores that day, bigger at the cove). Big winter surf is not conducive to swimming unless you like surfing too. The rips and currents pull you sideways towards the big stuff so you have to be prepared to swim the largest waves you see before you go out. Still I'm ready for it when I get back now if I can find a few more swimmers ready to brave it!
