I just started swimming a few weeks ago. ( lap swimming) I have no experience at all but would like to swim in a 2.2 mile event next june. Is this possible? Can anyone direct me to some type of workout plan leading up to the event? I just want to make sure I am not getting in over my head. Any reply would be greatly appreciated.

Go for it. Last October I could barely swim one lap! By Febraury I posted my first Mile in 35 minutes. In March I did my first 3 miler in 1:41 and In May I did my first open water swim of 2 miles. Then I went on to swim the bay(4.4 miles) with everyones help on this BBB I did it.
As leonard would tell me..."you can do it, just stay positive":) :) :)
Adam,
A year is typically more than enough time to prepare for a 2.2 mile Open Water swim.
As for the types of workouts, I would suggest that you get in contact with a local Masters swimming program and get involved with them. Once you’re there you can discuss your goals with the coach and see if their program suits your needs.
This past weekend, I was talking to a triathlete who only started swimming a year ago. She was still uncomfortable being in water too deep to stand. Also, in a previous race had suffered abuse from some of the other contestants during the swim (kicks, pushes, water waves just as the head turns to breathe, etc.)
I assume you were asking about conditioning, but make sure you address the other, non-fitness issues also.
