I am a 35 year old male and a runner. I would like to start swimming on a regular basis and am very interseted in open water swimming. I enjoy longer endurance type sports. I just ran my first ultra marathon. I really dont know where to start as far as the swimming goes. I do not have any prior experience axcept for a few triathlons when I was in my early teens. But that is really no help because I had no clue what i was doing.
How far should I swim at first?
What type of workout would be good for a beginner?
What books or videos would you recomend?
Thanks for your time and input!!!!

We need more info...
First, how much of a beginner are you? Do you really need more learn to swim lessons or stroke technique help?
Second, where are you from? You should be able to find competent teachers or coaches (depending on your level) where you live.
There are plenty of books and videos on swimming technique that you could use as supplements to a real live person helping you. Masters coaches in your area should be able to give you good help on stroke technique. And joining a team will give you instant friends and training buddies.
Open water swimming is a blast. There is nothing like finishing a race, taking off your suit and noticing all the green gunk in places where there shouldn't be any.
