How do you know it wasn't slowing him down, though? The fact he went so fast doesn't mean he couldn't have gone faster. I don't, but either do you. At the level these guys swim at..with the coaching, the stroke analysis, lactate testing, etc, etc.....I just don't think he'd be doing it if they thought it would slow him down. I mean, hell, it WAS the fastest time in history, I don't think he'd even care if it did. On a sidenote, he needs a cosmetic dentist on staff.:afraid:
  • I remember the USSR had a weight lifter in the 70's i think that broke the world record by the smallest of margin - so that each time he would get $$$$

What price did he pay for not winning the 400 free? In days just before the Worlds Sun told the press that he considered 400 free his most important race, as the rivals were more prominent and fierce (referring mostly to Park, and to lesser degree, Biedermann). It was the first gold medal event and he was eager to be the first swim champion for China in this world championship. Following his defeat to Park, the drumbeat for Sun in Chinese press decidedly felt silent whereas criticisms of his pregame bravado and his tactics in the 400 free final started to surface. Good thing he turned tide in the 800 free.
  • what were the best swims of the meet? who was most improved? What amazed you most?
  • What amazed you most? Definitely Sun Yang's 1500 where he was a couple seconds off the world record pace, but came storming home on the last 100 to break the record. I didn't think he had any chance at the record even at the 1450 meter mark.
  • what were the best swims of the meet? who was most improved? What amazed you most? Missy Franklin had the breakout meet that her Grand Prix performances foreshadowed, and her lead-off split in the 4x200 FR really made a statement.

Maybe a tad belated, but I found this impressive Italian coverage of the FINA worlds posted on another forum: www.youtube.com/.../AcademyRiservaForum

If Sun had not broken the WR - again by missing a fraction of a second like he did in the Asian Games last November, I bet there would have been lots of head scratching among his fans and second-guessing his coach's plan. Remember he already paid price for not winning the 400 free.

As for the world record, it made me wonder if he gets $$$ for each record. If so, it makes sense to break it by a little so he can do it again soon. East German backstroker Roland Matthes used to do this in the olden days. That makes a lot of sense..I'm sure it works that way in China. He has an insanely efficient stroke and I really think he could have put his legs into it earlier if he wanted to...I suspect he and his coach has big plans for next year...
