In days just before the Worlds Sun told the press that he considered 400 free his most important race, as the rivals were more prominent and fierce (referring mostly to Park, and to lesser degree, Biedermann). It was the first gold medal event and he was eager to be the first swim champion for China in this world championship. Following his defeat to Park, the drumbeat for Sun in Chinese press decidedly felt silent whereas criticisms of his pregame bravado and his tactics in the 400 free final started to surface. Good thing he turned tide in the 800 free.
