How Far Can You GLIDE?
Here's the Rules for Streamline Gliding:
1) Go Underwater,
2) push off the wall as hard as you can,
(should we have a FROM A DIVE category too?)
3) streamline as skinny as you can like Michael Phelps
4) glide as FAR as you can,
you measure your distance from the wall you started at to the furthest point your body reaches, probably your finger tips
5) but you can't kick or pull, you can only glide, if you kick or pull you are DQed
6) you're done when you stop, breathe, or break your streamline,
and
7) you are only allowed to wear one training suit or a 2011 FINA Approved tech suits, but no wetsuits or full body rubber suits,
you may wear a cap and goggles. pretty much follow the USMS suit rules

Don't want to take anything away from what you did because it was pretty cool... looks like a good challenge for the team tomorrow morning. However:
1) Doesn't having a diving well help a lot? Seems like you used bouyancy to build up some speed on the ascent. I think we may only have half that depth at best.
2) Would it be better to count where you break the surface? Otherwise this is an exercise in how long you can hold your breath as much as it is a gliding challenge... maybe that isn't a bad thing.
3) You need a longer pool :).
thanks, I don't think the wave from jumping in helped at all. The swim center has flowover gutters, I'm sure the wave travelled faster and washed over before I even got 1/2 the way across. Plus, can you really surf a wave in open ocean or just when it starts breaking.
I made it the whole way the day before & started in the water, jumping in just got me down to my starting point faster with less effort and it made the video shorter.
Very cool Ande. Try it again without jumping in- I think the wave from you jumping in helped significantly in the last 10m.

If a block, how high was it?
Size matters, though I believe a smaller person who
jumps further, streamlines better or masters

2) how deep to dive,
3) how to position their body along each point of their plunge, especially how to rise.
might be able to go further than a larger swimmer who isn't as gifted or skilled.
I also wonder how much breath is best to take in?
I think plungers need to go much deeper than a racing dive, then they want their bodies level to slightly up when they almost stall out underwater then attempt to rise up at a slight angle.

There was an early (1904?) Olympic event called plunge for distance. It starts with a dive and the competitors go as far as possible until any part of the body breaks the surface of the water. We do this all the time at the beginning of pratice. I"ve done it for many years. Always the person with the greatest body mass will go the farthest. It is like a row boat and a super tanker going the same speed (i.e. at the outset of the entry) and seeing which vessel stops first.

how long was that diving well?
I can push off about 2ft under water and glide the 12.5m diving well at my pool no problem.
I might try to get someone to film my attempt in a 25m to see if I can go further. I might even try to start a little deeper.

Like the Cal alums, we call it PFD. We do it all kinds of ways as long as everyone is doing it the same way. E.g., we do it off blocks, with proper racing dive form, with a big arm swing, from the side, with a running start, etc. It's just a fun way to get in the water at the beginning of practice.
I totally agree that superior form will allow a smaller person to sometimes beat a larger person. However, all things being equal, big people rule. And breaststrokers do particularly well. Our local champ is Big Wave Dave Gray: 6'4" and 250 lbs. who has held masters *** stroke records.
Breath control is also tricky. You have to start letting air out or you'll surface too quickly. In my pool avoiding the pool bottom at the trasition from the diving area is critical. BTW, I can only go around 50' before I either sink to the bottom (too much air let out) or break the surface.

15 yards this morning, did not jump in. pool depth was 8 feet drag suit
I can glide 15M in a shallow 3'5" 25M pool and I am about a foot shorter than Ande. I can push off pretty good (35-inch vertical jump in high school) but I don't swim so well.
Allen Stark has improved my stroke significantly in the past 3 years. I am down to 1:05 and 2:25 in yards starting from 1:13 and 2:48 in 2008.
At my current rate of progress, I should catch Roque Santos in another score or two. :banana:
