Hello, I am fairly new to swimming. Picked it up last semester, been swimming for about 7 months now. I can swim about 1500m now in succession and I've noticed my prolonged duration in the pool at my campus rec burns the living hell out of my skin.
Does anyone know of any products I can apply to my skin preswim in order to lessen the potential burn from prolonged exposure?
Thank you for your time!
I always have less trouble in the summer when I'm outside more and in the sun. I don't tan and I don't use sunscreen and if I haven't got cancer by now, I 'm not worried about it.
Try DermaSwim Pro. It's a pre-swim lotion and blocks the chlorine from leaching into the skin. I swim in various pools but there is 1 indoor pool that is very heavily chlorinated. Before I got this lotion, I would suffer from the effects for at least 24 hours after swimming in this pool. The only drawback is that it's pretty hard to get off and even after a shower, I can smell & feel the lotion lingering on my skin. But the smell isn't that strong and it's better than the strong chemical smell & severely dry/itchy skin. I haven't tried putting it on my face because my facial skin is very sensitive.
I find that I have burning on my chest and back, especially days when I "double dip" My general advice is just lube up!
I've never tried DermaSwim, and may likely see if I can find some and give it a try.
I find that for me it's just a general dry skin dermatitis and if I lube up I can control it. I've used Lubriderm lotion for a long time and other lotions. Avoid any that have any perfumes, if I understand correctly, these have alcohol in them as the carrier for the perfume and that defeats the whole purpose.
I've actually taken to simply using vaseline - really! - after swimming. I am finding my skin is so dry that I'm not feeling or looking greasy. Honest! :D I've always used it on my feet since swimming age group 'cause my toes would split. Ran out of my little bottle of lotion one day and just used the vaseline.
Oh, avoid the hot hot shower after. This can really strip what is left of your skin after a good workout! Hot tub is out, too.
