The school still keeps its standards unless they are lower than the NCAA (which are pretty low)
Div 1 Womens Swimming and Diving Programs are allowed to have 14 scholarships
Div 1 Mens Swimming and Diving Programs are allowed to have 9.9 scholarships
This makes recruiting quite challenging for schools. Each year a D1 mens swimming & Diving program has around 2.5 scholarships to divvy up. Pretty much everyone on the mens team has partial scholarships, except for walk ons. I believe Books count as a 1% of a scholarship. Most of the womens team are on full scholarships.
If an athlete receives a partial scholarship, then the school's academic admission standards for that athlete shift from whatever the school requires to the NCAA minimum standards which is a sliding scale that looks at the students GPA & SAT score. The higher the students GPA the lower the required SAT score. The
2010-2011 Guide for the College Bound Student Athlete shows the scale on page 6.
As an example UT is pretty tough to get into, most students need to be in the top 10% of their classes to be accepted. Plus high school classes tend to shrink due to drop outs. I think my son's class started with over 500 students his fr year and but by the first semester of his sr year there were around 325.
