The 2008 Trials set a new standard for swimming excitement and 2012 promises to bring even more poolside thrills to America's Heartland.

There were qualifying times in 1956.
I went on the USA-S website and searched for Olympic Trials 1956 and found a photocopy of the heat sheet. Very interesting. What surprised me most was how few events there were. There was a 200 ***, but no 100 ***. There was a 100 back, but no 200 back.
I qualified in the 100 free, but did not go as I had just barely made the cut. Until I found the heat sheet, I wondered why I didn't qualify in the 100 *** as I always thought I was better in that event. Ironically, in my Masters career, 100 free is one of my worst events. Maybe some day I'll surprise myself.
Betsy, that's great that you qualified. More than I have ever done. Do you have the link to the 1956 heat sheets? I have a friend who went then and would love to see them.
Look for me in '88! 50 free. That would be about 2nd to last. I qualified with a 26.71 at which time I made the top 25 Americans list. And then promptly went into a major slump and was just trying to break 28 at that meet. My goal - beat someone. Anyone. Like the girl next me (I was in an end lane). The joy of first having someone false start in my heat. I remember feeling the pressure off - since my name would come ahead of the DQ's. I beat the girl next to me. I think she got about last.

Without mentioning where she finished in the 50 free (but suffice it to say she was pretty close to Michelle!) I noticed a teammate of mine at Michigan State, Mary Schoenle, in the results. She also finished around 20th in the 100 *** and may have swum other events, too. Mary's last name is now Armstrong and she's back swimming masters and posted some great times in Mesa!

I especially like the older, scanned results. You actually have to read through the results rather than search so you end up seeing all kinds of "blast from the past" names!

Some very cool names. BTW, I was able to search in the 1972 trial results.

Like a lot of us, I'm wondering what Phelps and Lochte will swim. Will Phelps try to make the team in the 100 back? Will Lochte? Could Phelps swim the finals in free and back, and then the semi-final in fly in one night?
