I suspect that USA Swimming was effectively stuck with the qualifying times once they were officially published. It's been interesting to watch hem try to put a good spin on it with talk of how wonderful it was for so many athletes to meet such high standards, and by the way, we're going to have to go with 10 lane flyover prelims in order to keep something resembling a timeline. It's pretty much a given that they'll tighten things up significantly for 2016.
But then it's good to select a team coming out of a meet where it's a bit crowded and not terribly comfortable. We want our athletes to be able to perform at the highest level even when everything doesn't seem perfect for them. If the tornado evacuation during warm-ups last time around was enough to throw you off your game for the meet, then you probably weren't going to travel overly well for Beijing either.
Meh, it scans, but that's about all. Feel free to improve:
Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow
Creep by these endless heats from day to day
Til the last 1500 Final - Men's.
And all our yesterdays burst forth in one almighty try.
Out, out, brief candle, Trials are but a walking shadow,
Where hopeful swimmers strut and fret their moment upon the stage
Then are seen no more.
It is a trek made by two thousand,
Full of sound and fury,
Qualifying several.
Glad to see she's not entering the 200 IM. Based on her 200 IM at senior nationals last summer, she would not have made the team. Maybe not even the top 8. Of course, it's entirely possible that she's improved her breastroke since then.
I was reading the Trials preview story in Splash (the magazine USA Swimming sends to its members) and it mentioned Franklin wanted to make Trials cuts in every event. I checked the database and it seems like she hasn't made the cut in the 100 and 200 *** and the 200 fly. Breaststroke is definitely the *** in her armor.
I couldn't come up with something more that scanned and sounded interesting. Tolkien works too though:
The meet goes ever on and on
Circling the lanes to blocks again
The starter calls them up once more
To blocks above those gone before
And in to chase the long black line
That leads to other days and times
Of glories, triumphs, golden hours,
And rivals known and yet to meet
What happens then? That tale will come.
