I'm pretty sure the 100 BR is before the MR.The faster swimmer at the Olympics will swim in the finals and the other swimmer will be in the prelims. With the exception of the Men’s 100 Fly final, all of the 100 events are done before the prelims of the Medley Relays. Who swims on what relays is the coach’s decision. Usually the slower of our 2 swims in prelims in the MR and the fastest in finals. In the free relays, usually the Olympic qualifiers in the 100 and the 200 free swim finals only and the next 4 fastest in USA trials swim prelims with the fastest 2 of those swimming in finals.
For the men’s 100 fly in the 400 MR, usually the coaches assess the 2 swimmers prelim and semi times to see who will swim prelims and who will swim finals. If they guess right our fastest flyer swims in finals. If they guess wrong we can have an Olympic Gold Medalist in the 100 fly not swim finals in the MR, as happened in 2004.
Olympic trials: Crocker 50.76 (W) Phelps 51.15
Olympic Prelims: Crocker 52.03 Phelps 52.35
Olympic Semi: Phelps 51.61 Crocker 51.83
Olympic Finals: Phelps 51.25 (Gold) Crocker 51.29 (Silver)
Phelps swan the prelims of the 4X100 MR and as the story goes, Phelps gave his spot in the relay finals to Crocker, who along with Perisol, Hansen and Lezak took gold and a WR.
