  • There would be a swim off. They would not go to the one thousandth of a second like they announced after the race on NBC. Now the Track and Field Federation is reviewing there options. There has been one time in the history of swimming that a race was decided by a thousandth of a second and that was the 400 IM final at the 1972 Olympics and Gunnar Larsson and Tim McKee had the identical time of 4:31.98 and the Omega timing device was dismantled and upon inspection it was found that Larrson had touched two-thousandths of a second ahead of McKee and he was awarded the gold medal. It was determined later that due to many factors like the possibility that lane lengths could vary slightly that judging a race in thousands of a second would not be accurate. This decision led to change in the international swimming rules that places would be award to a one hundredth of a second and swimmers with identical times would be award ties and both would get the same medal. Twice in Olympic history, two people have tied for the gold medal in these circumstances and those events were the Women's 100 Free where Carrie Steinseifer and Nancy Hogshead had the identical times of 55.92 at the 1984 Olympics and both were award the gold medal. The other instance was the Men's 50 Free at the 2000 Olympics where Gary Hall Jr. and Anthony Ervin had identical times of 21.98
