Pyramid set phenomenon?

So I have a question for endurance workout gurus..... Why was my pyramid swim of 100,200,300,400,500,400,300,200,100 with a send off of 1.30 per 100 that I swam this morning, so much easier than say a set of 8 x 300 off 4.30? That last 100 I came in at 1.17. On Sunday I did 24 x 100 and almost died (well not quite) but I ended up doing 20 off 1.30 then the last 4 off 2 mins to try and kick a bit of speed into those tired arms, and still only swam 1.22. Same distance and same base time.... I don't think my fitness has improved that much in 2 days (although Sunday was the first swim in 10 days due to birthdays and ice - I normally do 2-3 swims per week). So is it a psychological thing, or does your body automatcally get faster as the distance drops? So is it therefore advantageous to do descending distances rather than a set of the same distance? Actually that's quite a few questions :D
