  • Note to no200fly: I highly recommend training with no goggles. Note to self: When scratching an event, do not write "not sure yet" by name. You WILL INDEED be entered in that 100 fly that you didn't intend to swim!!! The second day of the meet included swims by a gold medalist Olympian and several new (Republic of Texas) world records. I chose to swim the super sprint pentathlon leaving the longer races (50 of each stroke and 200 IM) for others. Unfortunately, I did not take the advice of chowmi above and swam with goggles. Fourth competition, 25 fly. I didn’t feel choppy today and was able to ease past chowmi’s time (probably helped that she did 400 yds of sprints before my first race). Round 4, no200fly. Fifth competition, 25 back. I hate backstroke. I don’t like any stroke where water gets into my nose. If not for the IM, I would just as soon do away with it; however, I made the best of it (it’s just a 25) and with a less than perfect finish, I still managed to beat chowmi. Round 5, no200fly. Sixth competition, mystery 100 IM. This is the IM where they draw the order just before the meet starts – in this case ***, free, back, fly. I concentrate on the order on the block and get a good start but as I enter the water, I lose my goggles - again. This time, I don’t continue the race. Round 6, chowmi. Seventh competition, 25 ***. After losing my goggles twice in the same race in one weekend, I am rededicated to finish strong in the last two events. I started working on my breaststroke a couple of years ago when I thought shoulder problems were going to keep me from swimming fly. I had a good start and finish. Round 7, no200fly. Final, final competition, 25 free. I have never been really fast in sprint freestyle. When I was in college, Richard Quick tried to make me into a distance freestyler – that’s when I learned that I was not fast in distance freestyle. In the second women’s heat, chowmi set a new Republic of Texas World Record. That was too much for me. Round 8, chowmi. To echo what others said, this meet is a lot of fun. So, mark your calendar and plan to attend next year.
