The 2011 Go the Distance fitness event is now open. More than 2,200 members participated in 2010; why don't you join them for 2011? Go The Distance is an online self-directed fitness program intended to encourage Masters swimmers to regularly exercise and track their progress. Swimmers may strive to reach a number of distance milestones and automatically receive recognition for their achievements and awards at certain milestones. To get started, you will need to set up your FLOG (Fitness Log) on the USMS web site. Instructions can be found here: www.usms.org/features.php To see an example of the daily reports, click here: www.usms.org/.../gtdparticipants_clubs.php You can read more about the event here: www.usms.org/.../gothedistance HAPPY NEW YEAR! :party2: :cheerleader: :wine:

Just started Masters swimming at the end of last summer. I have already signed up for GTD to help keep me on track, especially since I work out on my own. Hmmm...not sure yet what goal to set...I'll have to think on that. Figure and avg. amount of yardage per week x 52 weeks. Take out a bit for vacations, tapers, etc. and that should give you something reasonable.:)
  • Oh, come on, 535.25 miles in November is only a hair over 30,000 yards a day! Someone could easily do this by swimming every single day in November for ten hours. :bolt: Oh yeah! piece of cake! :bolt: You can get that done in no time. I don't get why people would fudge GTD numbers.

Great tool for tracking everything. I ended up making my goal on Friday, the last day of the year, by 100 yards! (500 miles)! You should have stopped at 3700. You still would have had a 40 yard cushion. :) I dropped off a bit in December as well, but I usually do. Some of that has to do with the fact that I usually stay after practice and do extra kick sets since the noon practice is only an hour. During the last two weeks of December the kids practice throughout the day so it isn't as practical to stay in. I've participated in GTD since 2008 and will definitely do it again in 2011. Same distance goal (750). For me that distance goal definitely forces consistency, but it's not such a large goal that I can't blow it by missing a day or two. And since I didn't swim competitively as a kid, I need that much yardage to stay at least marginally competitive in meets. I do think that most people are honest with reporting their distances. It's pretty sad to think that people would overreport just for a $60 swimsuit.

Yeah, I knew I needed somewhere around that to make it so just did an extra bit to make sure! You are a swimming fool! Especially with all the running, parenting, and other stuff you do...I could only dream of having your energizer bunny life!!! :D I'm gonna scale back a little this year, do more quality stuff and work on more stuff out of the pool like cardio, weights, diet, etc. Since I'm not focusing on distance (thought I might swim the 800 or 1500 at Nationals) I'm gonna focus on the middle distance 200 and 400 for LCM. Remember, I don't have a paying job AND I completely crash at 9 p.m. Energizer bunny life... only sometimes. The rest of the time I fake it. :) I'll bet by changing your focus you'll become even stronger, even in events you're not expecting. That's what happened with my running. I stopped doing triathlons, cut down my distance, did more quality, and got more fit overall. I'm running faster at, ahem, 45 than I EVER have.

Thanks Lump, Based on my current workouts, I'll shoot for around 400 miles. I hope to do more but we'll see. My goals are to swim at Auburn in August and also participate in several open water swims. Quality and consistency are just as important to me as yardage. I will need a good mix of stroke and distance workouts. It's going to be a fun year! :D I see you are in Smyrna! Where are you swimming? I split time between Mountain View in Marietta and Cobb Central off Fairground. BTW, there is a SCY meet at Auburn in Feb. I would suggest going just to get familiar with the pool and its a GREAT meet to attend.

I'm gonna attempt to start getting up early again (albeit not at 5AM) to get my workouts done in the AM. So I'll get back to the bed by 10PM thing too. Just like you said, I just want to go for a little more all around fitness, have fun with it, get a little leaner and stronger. I was getting to the point of burning out a bit on the swimming. Don't think I'll ever get back to being a runner like I used to be due to my lower back, but just want to do enough to maybe make a 10K sometime.

  • I have never kept track of yardage over the course of a year, so I'm going to get on this for 2011. My quick estimation should put me around 750 miles for the year, but who knows how work will pan out.

I would suggest going just to get familiar with the pool and its a GREAT meet to attend. I swim at LA Fitness in Austell (5 min from my house). I need the flexibility in their hours..I can swim almost anytime. Cobb Central is close also and it would be nice to have a training partner every now and then. Let me know if you would like to meet up sometime. I plan on going to Auburn in Feb, but I haven't registered yet. I also plan on going to a Charlotte meet for one day at the end of Jan. I want to swim the 1650 and get a base time.
