Freestyle Video

What do you think of this guy's freestyle? I found it looking for advice on the proper freestyle stroke. The stroke looks relaxed. I am not sure about the wide angle of his arms on the entry and extension. YouTube - Sample stroke Thanks. David
  • This "endless pool" is not a good format for the video. Water is not usually blasting up and over the freestyler, and the person in the video is having to adapt to maintain position to the flow and camera.

I don't think it is worth looking at.
  • His stroke looked better in the pool. I think I would still like to see more extension during the entry with the upper arm coming in contact with the side of the head and a catch a bit closer to the centerline. His stroke was a mess in the endless pool.

I don't think it is worth looking at. Why? You comment doesn't provide any useful information

The arms do look a bit wide and the wrist is breaking on entry - this will slow you down. This may be a function of swimming in an "endless pool" where the slower and more deliberate stroke would keep him steady and not smash into the front of the water jet. If there is video swimming in a standard lap pool lane I'm sure that may be more informative. Did you get a chance to see the end of the clip, where he is swimming 25 yard pool? I didn't think there was enough footage to provide a great deal of insight. This "endless pool" is not a good format for the video. Water is not usually blasting up and over the freestyler, and the person in the video is having to adapt to maintain position to the flow and camera. Thanks for the feedback from both of you. I wonder if the endless pool causes people to alter their stroke.

Bottom line, there are a LOT of videos out there with better technique and better better quality. There is not much in that video worth trying to "copy"...

Like others have said, it's hard to judge the technique in an endless pool. Betweenstrokes, he looks like he is trying to "balance", which wouldn't be happening in a pool. Stroke is way too slow, arms are not going far enough to the midline, nor pulling far enough down, legs are all over the place... Why do you care so much?

I posted the video to see what others thought as well. Replies that say "not worth watching" don't provide any insight as to why. He offers private lessons and was considering taking them. I had heard good things about his coaching. Then I saw the video of him swimming. I had second thoughts because his stroke looked strange, so I wanted other swimmers opinion before deciding to spend money on lessons.

I would find it hard to find anything good about his stroke. The problem is that he does not enter his hands properly. Yes they are too wide the hands are flexed out and it looks like he is pushing against the water with the back of his hands. I think I can tell that he learned his technique from a DVD that I would not ever buy. The Endles pool is a hard to swim in item you have to bury your head very deep in order to keep your legs up. He also ran the pool in a very slow position this made it awkward to get into the proper position. In the Endless pool it seem he finished above his waist line, I would sooner he finish a little lower Just don't try to copy what you see he may not swim like this video shows. However he may be a great teacher?
