I posted this in another thread somewhere, but the shocking event will be ... 200 fly. Yes. The 200 fly. Why? According to his buddy Ed Moses (look at my post history) ... b/c his 100 fly in the 400IM is just off of Phelps', and that's with very little emphasis/training. Lochte 2012 speculation 200/400 IM- really good odds winning 100 bk -lots of competition to make the team 200 bk -much better chance than the 100 bk, good odds winning 100 fr -outside chance to make team/medal 200 fr -good medal potential 4 x 200 relay -good chance medal/winning 4 x 100 fr relay -good chance to make the relay, potentially tough to win 4 x 100 mr -obviously depends on the 100 bk Substitute 4x100 free and replace it w/ 200 fly and that's what Lochte will be shooting for in London: 9 golds. IF the event order will permit. But the key is the 100 back b/c that will get him 2 chances at golds (if he wins the 100back and the US wins the medley relay).
  • White Americans are conservative (non-political sense) and modest. It is neither right nor wrong to be that way, but to suggest that someone lacks sportsmanship because they don't meet your cultural expectation is, well, poor form on your part. My inlaws (Korean) slurp their soup. It's not rude, it's just how they do it. More importantly, the quest for 8 is over... I disagree. We aren't talking cultural differences between countries. We are talking in the USA. It is poor sportsmanship to gloat on every play in the US. That is why most sports enforce penalties for excessive and unneeded celebrations.

If Peirsol can take on the 100 fly, why not Lochte giving the 200 fly a shot?

Personally I think his chances in the 100 back are better than the 200 fly. One of Lochte's best event used to be the 1500, so while I actually think the 9 golds is a physical impossibility due, he just MIGHT have enough gas in the tank to do it. Nahh...

  • Well the Lochte-butterfly conspiracy theorists here have plenty more to talk about. :argue: Lochte swam the butterfly leg of our 400 medley relay in Dubai today, and posted the fastest split in the field @ 49.17. He passed Korotyshkin to put us in the lead for good. :applaud: www.omegatiming.com/.../C73B1_Res1Heat_139_Finals_Men_4x100_Medley.pdf An amazing performance, expecially since it was his 3rd swim of the night. It would have been interesting to see how his swim would have ranked if Phelps, Cavic, and/or Munoz were around... :anim_coffee:
  • FLY baby FLY !!!!!!!! It's the only stroke that you can wave to the stands with BOTH hands !! :applaud::applaud:
  • I know it was a rolling start, but 49.1?? Tyler McGill went 51.1 in semis. Does anyone know if Lochte has ever swam fly in international competition? Seems like since the beginning of time, it's been Crocker and Phelps on the relays. Not that I'm aware of, but I haven't done an exhaustive search... or even a 10-minute search :). His Wikipedia page Wikipedia page mentions this: Other accomplishments in 2006 include breaking the 11-year-old Southeastern Conference (SEC) record in the 100-yard butterfly previously held by John Hargis.
  • Isn't the world record 49.8? And Ryan seems to have more stamina than Phelps. If Ryan were to pick the 100 fly, I think Phelps would rise to the challenge. But the 200... The problem for Phelps is that he hasn't been training hard core since Beijing, and just will have a difficult time matching Lochte's base. 49.1 Holy Cow. That shows that he's been focusing on fly. And he's got another year and a half. Holy. F'ing. Cow. Don't forget, this is short course. The WR is 48.48: www.omegatiming.com/.../C73A1_Res1Heat_107_Finals_1_Men_100_Fly.pdf
