Are these one time discounts for new members or renewers, or are there discounts throughout the year? Anyhow, I just took a leap and decided to join. I had been going back and forth on this for a couple years, mainly because I felt that my swimming stunk and I wouldn't even be able to complete a Masters practice (or I would drive everyone else nuts). Then a funny thing happened about a month ago. After almost 3 years of not being able to go more than 3 laps at a time, and contemplating going to a pulmonologist to evaluate my pulmonary function, I decided to relax while swimming. I mean really relax, physically and mentally. I loosened my leg muscles and my arm muscles, I stopped pulling so hard but rather imagined myself gently floating over an anchored arm, and Bam! That day I swam 10 laps straight. Now I do 15 pretty easily and faster. So I'm ready to present myself to the swimming world without fear. I'm a bone fide USMS member and can call myself a swimmer. :applaud:

Taruky,
Congratulations on the breakthrough and thank you for joining. We have a new member on my team who couldn't swim more than 25 yards without stopping. Like you, she kept trying and she can now do 100 yards at a time. She also commented that they key is to relax. So don't worry about not being able to make it through a workout. If you have to stop, you have to stop. Everybody understands.
For a new swimmer such as yourself, our Go The Distance fitness event would be a great way to chart your progress. It's basically an online fitness log ("FLOG") where you log how many yards you swim each day (or week or however often you swim). The log keeps track of your total distance, for that month and for the year, in miles. When you hit milestones (50 miles, for example) you get little gifts. This year Nike was the event sponsor. As each participant hit 50 miles, they received a Go The Distance swim cap.
To answer your question about the discounts, they are valid until January 15th and are available to both new and renewing members. As far as additional promotions during the year, I think it will depend on our sponsors and what sort of feedback they receive from these discount offers. They were all very enthusiastic about participating.
Thank you again, and welcome!
Anna Lea
The discounts are a great motivator but with the decline in the amount of meets that clubs have. A swimmer who is in masters for the competition aspect of it, maybe disappointed with what they find.
