JIMMY THOMPSON: COACH (Swimming) Inducted to the City of Hamilton Hall of Fame 2010
• Swimming Director of The Municipal Swimming Pool from 1932 to 1966 where he taught over sixty thousand children how to swim, started the Learn to Swim program, introduced water polo to the Hamilton Aquatic Club, started swimming programs for physically disabled children and adults
• Head swimming coach of the Hamilton Aquatic Club from 1932 to 1966 where he coached swimming, water polo, diving and synchronize swimming
• Honourary coach of The Canadian-American Dual Swim meet from 1954 to 1965
• 1958 honoured at the Kinsmen Clubs Annual Sports night
• 1959 City of Hamilton Citizen of the Year
• 1964 named Canada’s Swimming Coach of the Year
• 1966 The Jimmy Thompson Memorial Trophy was inaugurated by the London Y club to be presented at national championship for the women’s 220 yd freestyle event
• 1967 The Jimmy Thompson Memorial Trophy was inaugurated by Flint Michigan Journal which is presented annually to the swimmer best combining ability and sportsmanship at the Canusa Games
• 1967 received Special Achievement Award Citation from Province of Ontario
• 1971 Hamilton Municipal Pool was renamed in his honour
• 1977 Jimmy Thompson memorial award was inaugurated by the Canadian Water Polo Association to persons who have made an outstanding contribution to that sport in Canada
• 1978 he was inducted into the Canadian Swimming Hall of Fame
• 1991 he was inducted into the Ontario Aquatic Hall of Fame, Etobicoke, Ontario.
• In 1997 unveiling of the Jimmy Thompson Plaque at the Jimmy Thompson Memorial Swimming Pool.
My H S swim coach shaped my career. Dave Walrey of REAVIS H S in Burbank, Il , was the best person I had meet in H S . His example of coach & teacher is what I became in my 41 years of teaching & 22 years of girls & 12 years of swim coaching.
