2nd hand knowledge but here goes:
Spitz was not known as a hard worker in college. I read a story that he got in the pool for the first workout of the season and convinced Doc to give him another week off if he could break 50 in a 100 yard fly. He did it and didn't show up to workout for another week.
So what I heard about the comeback was he thought he could fall in the water and go a 54 in the 100M fly. He didn't put in the work at all.
Count me in the camp of those who are skeptical, but I do buy the claim that no one has ever done what Dara has done.
