Pacific Masters poll concerning tech suits

I am posting this as an informational item only. If you guys want to start another tech suit flame war over this, have at it, but I won't be participating. Yesterday, I received an email which stated: United States Masters Swimming is considering whether to allow Tech Suits (ie Blue 70, Speedo Fastskins, etc ) at short course yards meets. Pacific Masters is polling swimmers who registered for the 2010 Pacific Masters Short Course Championships to find out what our swimmer's opinion is of this proposed rule change. The polling will close at noon, Tuesday September 7th. This poll should take less than five minutes to complete. We do value your opinion, we hope to find out more about what our members think. Unfortunately, having responded to the poll questions I can no longer access the poll, or I would post the questions too.
  • That's a bit of a stretch, calling the vast majority of the state "southern." The Virginia LMSC includes all but a tiny part of the state: the counties of Arlington and Fairfax, or the blue part of this map. Geographically speaking, you PV people are just a pimple on the great state of VA... :bolt: As of today, there are 1324 swimmers registered in Potomac Valley from the great state of VA. That's a pimple larger than half the LMSCs around the country! They certainly keep me in business! Chris, would you like me to mail you an Ancient Mariners transfer form? Jeff Roddin (Potomac Valley Registrar)

We'd rather swim faster. :bolt:
  • I just noticed this will be in the upcoming issue of SWIMMER: Both Sides of the Lane Line Tech Suits: It's Time to Move On by Chris Stevenson Bring Them Back for Masters SCY Meets by James De Lacy
  • Yes, you guys are big and pimply. And apparently proud of it! We'd rather swim faster. :bolt: Nice comeback! To normalize the "scoring by LMSC tables," it would be interesting if you did a "per capita" comparison. Then I think New England would really show California who is the "virtual champion" to end their years of debate.
  • I just noticed this will be in the upcoming issue of SWIMMER: Both Sides of the Lane Line Tech Suits: It's Time to Move On by Chris Stevenson Bring Them Back for Masters SCY Meets by James De Lacy AND an article on Title IX, I notice. All we need is a Dara Torres doping story, and this issue would keep the forum busy for months. Especially if the mag isn't on everyone's doorstep first thing in the morning on Sept 1. Whoops...:worms::waiting: (How did I ever miss the "waiting" smiley before now? It MUST have been invented for the "Where's my SWIMMER?" threads that start every 2 months.)

Great use of Smilies, Chris! :D Although, I'm sure it will annoy Wookiee as much as my blue Comic Sans MS 3... :bolt:
  • There is no need to do that. They can poll a larger group and then have a question like "have you competed in a national or regional championship in the last two years?" to see what this "most competitive" subset thinks. It is always better to have the data and not need it, rather than the other way around. The only (intellectually honest) reasons to ignore the larger membership that I can think of are: (i) the cost of polling or (ii) fear of annoying people with another email or survey when they don't care about the issue. I think it is arguable that the majority of the most competitive people will compete regardless of what suits are allowed. Perhaps the people most worth listening to are the ones on the margins. I can see the reason they didn't poll the majority of their members is to skew the results towards the one they want or expect.
  • Hmm, comparing something that is perfectly legal in the United States (swimwear) with something that is completely illegal (without a medical prescription). Paul - you either missed the point Geochuck was trying to make or have chosen to ignore it with a tired old argument. And I know you're too smart to have missed the point. Let's use a different analogy. It's like having a poll of only backstrokers being allowed to voice their opinion: shall we remove the 15m restriction on underwater SDKs off the start? Or better yet, let's ask all non-breastrokers how they feel about eliminating the breastroke leg of the IM! :bump: (I'm just having a little fun with you Paul :bighug:)
  • Or better yet, let's ask all non-breastrokers how they feel about eliminating the breastroke leg of the IM! When is this poll coming out? Has it been raised as an option for the convention? I'm in favor, *** is not really a stroke anyway, more of a swimming curiosity.
