swimming after neck surgery

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with resuming swimming and competition after having 2 neck vertebrae fused together. How long did you wait? How was it easing back into your workouts? The doctor recommended 3 months so of course I tried to get back in after 2 weeks. Not one of my brighter ideas or one that I am currently continuing. I have been “FAST” walking 3 miles a day with leg weights every other day. The problem is that my upper body is wasting away. Any ideas or experience with this?

I didn't have a fusion but rather an artificial disk put in instead. I didn't ask about swimming but when you have a fusion, you need those bones to knit which should take at least 6 weeks. I had a nerve that was pinched and still hurt some after surgery so I didn't want to aggravate it so I took it easy - no upper body workouts. He also would not send me to PT until the 3 month visit. In other words, take it easy - spinal surgery is a big deal! Good luck!
