I live far from any masters teams (that I know of, anyways). I am grateful to be in touch with triathletes in the area, but I want to swim with other masters swimmers in practice, meets, and especially on relays. My questions are:
1) How do you start a masters club/team?
2) Can you swim on a relay without belonging to a team, i.e. swim with other unattached swimmers as exhibition?

There are only two clubs currently registered in Michigan. One of them, Great Lakes State Masters, has 6 members. The other one, Michigan Masters, has 727 members. (There are also 51 unattached swimmers in the Michigan LMSC.)
If you poke around the older threads in these forums, you'll see that Michigan Masters is what is called a "regional club" or a "super club". It was formed for the exact purpose that you mentioned - so that the members can all swim on relays together when they go to meets.
If you look at this list, you'll see that many of the club MICH members have a "workout group" listed next to their names. The workout group denotes the group of people that they swim with: www.clubassistant.com/.../usms_members.cfm
You could go a couple of different ways here. You could start your own club and register it. Or you could join the Michigan Masters club and form a workout group to swim with. (Or, if you're lucky, maybe we can find a workout group near you that is already in existence.)
The Michigan registrar, Ken Cooper, can help you transfer you to the Michigan Masters club, or start your own club.
Send me a PM and give me your email address. I can put you in contact with Ken. I can also tell you whether there are any other swimmers from your area who are USMS members. I did a quick look at all of our Michigan members but I don't see any who live in Suttons Bay. So you'll have to let me know what city you live in and which other ones are nearby.
