Swim Skin

Our magazine has had several articles on medical issues for swimmers, but I have not seen anything on the long term effects of swimming and ageing on one's skin. As a swimmer I take several showers each day in addition to the chlorine and sunshine that one receives each day. I would assume that the removal of oils from the body due to daily swimming and showering have some detrimental issues. Just curious as I age to see if ther are some things I should be doing to keep from looking like a deflated ballon.

  • I'd say that no matter what swimming does to your skin the physiological and psychological effects you will obtain from a regular swimming program will far outweigh the effects on your skin. Try this: **Rinse after sswimming; only use soap every 3rd time. **Shampoo 1X per week. Rinse and use conditioner only after the rest of your swims. **Use CeraVe lotion liberally all over your body after each shower; it works. You can buy it for a decent price at your local drug store. **If you're swimming outside USE SUNSCREEN with at least 30 SPF! Enjoy! Swimming is good for the mind, body, and soul!
