The recent Butterfly rules interpretation - recovery of the arms got me wondering if you swim the style of breaststroke where you recover your arms above the water (except your elbows) is legal butterfly, if only for masters where the breaststroke kick is allowed. The rules don't specify that you have to recover the arms out to the side so as long as you recover your arms high enough it should be legal?

the legal butterfly recovery....
during the recovery, from the wrist to the shoulder must break the surface of the water, ie be seen. not just the elbow, not just the forearm, not just the upper arm...but the entire arm.
vertically, any portion of the 'arm' (defined as wrist to shoulder) must be seen, meaning that the arm need not have air underneath it. if the arm has visibly broken the surface, ok. again, the entire arm must be seen...wrist to shoulder.
there is probably an exaggerated *** stroke that could meet this requirement....though the stroke may not produce much propulsion, thus self defeating
(there are of course many other criteria pertaining to the fly, including the legal possibility for masters swimmers to use 1 *** stroke kick per cycle (during arm recovery), either with or without accompanied dolphin kicks)
